The Golden Transcript Tintype

Good morning, Goldenites, and welcome to the Golden Transcript Tintype!

If I haven’t met you yet, I’m Corinne Westeman — Golden Transcript reporter for four years and fellow Goldenite for almost 10! (Heritage Road, represent!)

I know a lot of emails and other newsletters are hitting your inboxes this morning, so here’s the gist:

I’ll be sending out these newsletters every Tuesday to recap all the Golden stories my colleagues and I have covered over the last week. I want these to be brisk but fun — a proverbial shot in the arm before your morning commute/classes/KaffeeKlatsch/etc.

I’ll save the full story of how I came up with the Tintype name for another time, but I wanted a name that would evoke Golden’s unique history and/or natural features, but also capture exactly what I want this newsletter to be — a snapshot of local news. And, well, Tintype fit the bill perfectly!

Now, going forward, this section will include some of my takeaways from the last week.

You can thank some friends of mine for the formatting. They’ve gotten me into the habit of recapping my weeks as “High-Low-Buffalo.” Perhaps some of you are familiar with it: a high point, a low point, and a random thing that happened. This will give you a glimpse into my week before we dive into the actual headlines.

So, without further ado, let’s get this Tintype in focus:

🦬 This week’s High-Low-Buffalo

High: Putting together and sending out the inaugural Tintype! 🥳 (But my first time covering UllrGrass was a close second.)

Low: This weekend and yesterday were incredibly busy, and it seemed like all my prospective assignments were happening at the same time. So, I had to pick some to cover myself and make alternative arrangements for others.

Buffalo: I drove up to Clear Creek County for the first time in ages, and it’s surreal to see the I-70 Floyd Hill construction and the new apartments atop the former Digger Field. Both were stories I covered for years when I worked for the Transcript’s sister paper, The Clear Creek Courant, and now they’re a reality! 😮

🦖 A BLAST FROM THE PAST: Searching the Transcript archives

This week’s keyword search: “golden retriever”

The results: A hilarious anecdote and an unfortunate typo from 1967 😬

Cats Whail-Dongs Run!

Chris Samples’ two beautiful white Samoyed dogs got into a bit of a sticky wicket last Saturday when they tangled with a bristling porcupine on North Turkey Creek. Their big venture ended rather ignominiously at Dr. Anderson’s office, where they had to be put under in order to have the painful quills removed. As they were passing out, they were emitting rather eerie wails of dreamy protest. About this time, a large golden retriever, padded in nonchalantly for a rabies shot, took one look at those white apparitions yowling on the table, promptly put both shaggy paws over its eyes and streaked for the nearest exit.
