The Golden Transcript Tintype

Good morning, Goldenites, and happy Mardi Gras!

We have lots of new readers today. If you are one of them: Welcome to the Tintype — a weekly round-up of Golden news every Tuesday!

There are lots of great stories in this edition — particularly on the sports side, as winter teams are wrapping up their seasons — and a fun Mardi Gras-themed “Blast from the Past” section, so be sure to read until the end. And please share the Tintype with other Goldenites! If you want to send them the sign-up link or read previous editions, click here.

Before we dive in, here’s a quick recap of my work week in the form of High-Low-Buffalo. (High point, low point, and a random thing that happened)

🦬 This week’s High-Low-Buffalo

High: It always cracks me up when I’m on assignment at a sporting event or something, and people see my camera, grab their friends and say, “Take a picture of us.” The Mines O-Line used to do it. Some folks at UllrGrass did it a few weeks ago. And I had a Mines wrestler and coach(?) do it at Friday night’s dual. 📷 Full disclosure: 95% of the time, those pictures won’t make it to the print edition. But I’m more than happy to put them in the Facebook photo album. So, to the Mines wrestler and coach, you can find your photo there!

Low: My Friday was insanely hectic. A breaking news story. Another story on deadline. An evening assignment. And on top of all that, my coworkers and I had to figure out all the kinks with our new HR portal, so we can get paid next week. 😵 Needless to say, I was happy when Saturday rolled around.

Buffalo: While I wrote the bulk of this newsletter at home, I’m writing this intro section at a shopping center, because I forgot the library is closed for Presidents’ Day. As unusual as it is, it doesn’t crack the Top 5 of “Weirdest Places I’ve Filed Stories From.” 😅

🌄 ATOP THE FOOTHILLS: The week’s top story

Downtown Golden to host comedy festival Feb. 23-March 8

“Boulder just got (the Sundance Film Festival) to help them in the wintertime, and this could be a similar boon for our shoulder season,” DDA board member Brad Miller said.

BETWEEN THE MESAS Other highlights from the week

Golden Police seek help identifying sexual assault suspects

Officials first alerted people about the incidents Jan. 30, but didn’t provide many details or suspect descriptions until Feb. 13. Officials said it was to protect the victims’ privacy and maintain the investigations’ integrity.

National Laboratory of the Rockies lays off another 134 employees

“Beyond being some of our country’s brightest minds, these are our community members, our neighbors, who have families to support,” U.S. Representative Brittany Pettersen, D-Lakewood, said of the layoffs.

NLR officials haven’t disclosed much information about the layoffs, such as how many of the laid off employees were based in Golden.

🤠 AROUND THE VALLEY: Education, sports, arts & more

Jeffco promised to protect its neediest schools. But a COTLN investigation has found that, when students leave, the per-pupil funding leaves with them, erasing budget protections at 70 of 119 schools. Read the story here.

The City of Golden will receive special artwork for the state’s 150th anniversary, but several details — like what kind of artwork it’ll be or where it’ll be installed — are still up in the air. Read the story here.

The GHS girls swimming team took third place at state this weekend. We had a preview story on our website, but here is CHSAA’s coverage of the meet.

🦖 A BLAST FROM THE PAST: Searching the Transcript archives

This week’s keyword search: “Mardi Gras”

The results: A local church shared authentic parade favors during the 1968 Ice Cream Carnival. The Transcript ran photos of it on March 3, 1968. (Also, what is an Ice Cream Carnival, and why doesn’t Golden have that anymore? I wanna go!) 🍦

Parade Favors Come to Golden

If you’ve always wanted to attend the Mardi Gras, mark Shrove Tuesday (Feb. 27) on your calendar. The Mardi Gras is coming to you! Authentic Mardi Gras favors, sent from a parade float in New Orleans, will be tossed into the crowd each half-hour during the Ice Cream Carnival at Calvary Episcopal Church. Also in true Mardi Gras tradition, a king and queen will be chosen to reign during each half-hour of the event, which is scheduled from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
