The Golden Transcript Tintype

Happy Tuesday, Goldenites!

There have been several holidays — or rather holy days — in the last seven days. So, to those who celebrate, I hope your Lunar New Year, Lent and/or Ramadan is off to a great start!

This was a busy week around Golden, particularly in terms of sports news and local events. And with March only a few days away, that’s going to ramp up with March Madness, spring break, etc.

Be sure to check out all the great stories below and stick around for some old fashion(ed) news — literally — in the “Blast from the Past” section!

And please help me spread the word about the Tintype! People can sign up and read previous editions here.

You don’t have to live in Golden to sign up! Yes, most of our current subscribers live in or around the city, but I’ve heard from people joining us from Florissant to Florida, from Virginia to Maine. We even have some snowbirds in Arizona reading this right now.

So send this to your fellow Demons and Orediggers who’ve moved away, your kids who are at college, and your neighbors who are traveling for the next few months. As long as you love Golden and want to stay up-to-date on the news, that’s the only requirement to sign up for the Tintype!

Anyway, before we dive in, here’s a quick recap of my work week in the form of High-Low-Buffalo. (High point, low point, and a random thing that happened)

🦬 This week’s High-Low-Buffalo

High: Shout-out to our freelance photographer, Sara Hertwig! With her help, the Transcript was able to cover more news-ground this week, as she got Ash Wednesday photos at the Cabrini Shrine while I was tackling Colorado Apex coverage. 📸

Low: I know the mountains have finally gotten some much-needed snow, but it’s dangerously dry in Golden. Send prayers, good vibes, rain dances, etc. I’m afraid of what the rest of 2026 will look like if we don’t get significant moisture soon. 🤞 😬 🤞

Buffalo: When I was looking through file photos for GPD Chief Joe Harvey’s retirement announcement, I noticed that a year ago to the day, I’d gotten a photo of him at Jeffcom 911’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Golden headquarters. Wow. What a difference a year makes. 🥹

🌄 ATOP THE FOOTHILLS: The week’s top story

The stitching that binds: Fashion show raises $7,000 for Stacy Fowler’s fight against cancer

The runway at the Golden Fashion Show featured not only models — people displaying the clothes — but also role models.

Hardworking Golden business owners, employees, neighbors and even the mayor took turns showing off the latest fashions from Golden-based Alyth Active and Truly BoHotique.

But the final lap was dedicated to “Coach” Stacy Fowler, who received a standing ovation, cheers and handshakes.

On Feb. 21, about 200 people packed into Morris & Mae and Connects Workspace Red Rocks for the third annual Golden Fashion Show.

Along with the fashion show itself, the event featured about 20 local vendors selling a variety of fashion, beauty, health and wellness products; a bar; and a silent auction. Organizers said they had record attendance, selling 42 more tickets this year than last year.

BETWEEN THE MESAS Other highlights from the week

Joe Harvey has retired as Golden’s police chief

Golden Police Chief Joe Harvey has announced his retirement, city officials stated late Feb. 19.

Harvey was named GPD chief in 2022, and previously served as the department’s deputy chief since 2018.

City officials anticipate hosting a going-away celebration for Harvey, likely in early April. Part of it might be open to the public, but details are still being determined.

Hundreds of Catholics started their Lenten season with Ash Wednesday Mass at the Mother Cabrini Shrine.

In general, Lent — which Catholics and some other Christian denominations observe — starts on Ash Wednesday and helps people spiritually prepare to celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection at Easter. It is a time characterized by prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

A fashion show was presented by the girls in the home economics classes, grade and high school, Tuesday, May 21, under the supervision of Mrs. Luddington, instructor.

The dresses, grouped as house, school, street, afternoon, and sport were modeled by the girls who made them. Other work done by the girls was also on display.

After the show, tea was served by the mothers of the P.T.A. Council. Mrs. Baxter and Mrs. Adams poured.

The year’s work in home training as given at the high school culminated with the fashion show and exhibit.
