Dry weather, wind lead to a safety power shutoff

Businesses and homes in Golden will lose power again this weekend as Xcel Energy plans a Public Safety Power Shutdown from 2-9 p.m. Saturday.

A Dec. 17-21 shutdown left thousands of people without electricity for days and cost Golden-area businesses an estimated $1.75 million. Xcel told us in January that another power shutdown was a matter of when, not if.

Today, Xcel Energy is noting that the dry conditions and this weekend’s forecasted wind have led the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning through 9 p.m. Saturday.

Goldenites and others in Jefferson County are encouraged to make plans now and make sure their phones, laptops, battery packs, medical equipment and other devices are fully charged beforehand. If necessary, people should make backup plans with friends or relatives outside the potential impact area.
