The Golden Transcript Tintype

Happy Tuesday, Goldenites, and welcome back to the Golden Transcript’s Tintype newsletter!

The first week of February is always a fun — or at least busy — time in Golden.

Local schools’ Wish Week raises tens of thousands of dollars for Make-A-Wish Colorado every year. The annual Goldens in Golden event brings in larger and larger crowds to downtown Golden. And this year, the Mines wrestling team won at least a share of its second-straight RMAC title during its Feb. 6 Senior Night dual.

And on top of the local events, early February also features the Super Bowl and — this year — the Winter Olympics. (Although the former would’ve been more interesting for people around Denver if the Broncos had gone instead of the Patriots.) 😞

So, yes, February is off to a busy start. Check below to read more about it, and stick around to the very end for a “Blast from the Past” search about Valentine’s Day. But first, a quick High-Low-Buffalo about my week:

🦬 This week’s High-Low-Buffalo

High: I was on vacation for most of the week, enjoying time with friends and family, and soaking up the sun on the sandy shores of … Kansas. 😎

Low: As you’ll see below, we covered three separate stories involving actual or alleged violence against children this week. Reporting on things like that is always hard.

Buffalo: I took a few copies of the Jan. 29 Golden Transcript to Kansas with me, to share with loved ones. One of my friends took his copy home, where his kids turned the front-page photo of the upcoming Dinosaur Ridge exhibit into a meme of sorts in their family group text. Don’t worry: It was all in good fun. 😆

🌄 ATOP THE FOOTHILLS: The week’s top story

Goldens in Golden draws 16,000 humans — and likely just as many dogs — to Washington Avenue

The 411: Thanks to both good weather and growing popularity, the seventh annual Goldens in Golden event drew an estimated 16,000 people to downtown Golden Saturday. While it was certainly crowded, golden retriever families seemed to enjoy their dog days of February.

BETWEEN THE MESAS Other highlights from the week

Golden goes pink to kick off annual Wish Week fundraiser

The 411: Golden schools and community members have raised more than $225,000 for Make-A-Wish Colorado as part of their wintertime spirit week, called Wish Week, over the last eight years. On Feb. 2, Golden High School introduced this year’s Wish Kid, Margaret, at a pep rally kicking off the ninth annual celebration.

Jeffco Sheriff’s Office isn’t filing charges against EHS shooter’s parents

The 411: Golden-based JCSO investigators have concluded their five-month investigation into the tragic Sept. 10 shooting at Evergreen High School, which left two students critically injured. The 16-year-old shooter killed himself, and investigators were left wondering how he accessed the gun.

Also of note: The Transcript and its sister papers had a related story on how teachers who’ve survived previous school shootings are now helping the EHS community. Read that story here.

🤠 AROUND THE VALLEY: Education, sports, arts & more

🦖 A BLAST FROM THE PAST: Searching the Transcript archives

This week’s keyword search: “Valentine’s Day”

The results: Like us in 2026, Goldenites marking Valentine’s Day 1943 were experiencing summer-like temps; but they saw it as a welcome relief from snow, which we haven’t had much of this winter… 😮

“Transcriptions” by Geo. M. Kimball

Whoever picked St. Valentine’s day as the date for the 1943 Winter picnic of the Colorado Los Angeles society certain did a good job. The thermometer was hanging up around the 90 mark, suggesting an August day in Colorado. The sky was unusually clear, therefore more like a Colorado than a California sky, thus bringing into bold relief those snow-capped mountains thirty miles away. All around, it was a great day for a picnic.
